英語でより良い物語を話す方法Telling Better Stories in English
「以前こんなことがあった」と最近や昔の話を英語で話すとき、あなたは上手く伝えられますか？実は、ちょっとしたコツを知るだけで、あなたの話がもっと魅力的に、生き生きと相手に伝わるようになります。これは英検の面接試験でもぜひ押さえておきたいポイントです。自然な英語で円滑にコミュニケーションをとれるよう、さらに自信をつけていきましょう！

長久手市のはなみずき通校やオンラインで、英検対策をする生徒さんや通常の英語学習をする生徒さんたちを指導する中で、物語を話したり絵を見て説明したりする際に、ある共通した課題があることに気付きました。この短いブログ記事が、生徒さんたちや、より広いコミュニティの皆さんにとって、この問題の背景にある理論を理解していただける一助となれば幸いです。もちろん、理論を知るだけでは、実践に代えることはできません。エクスリンガルでは生徒さんたちに、積極的に実践を積むことを強くおすすめしています。
では、私が気付いたこの問題点とは何でしょうか？それは、魅力的かつ効果的な話をするために、どのように過去進行形と単純過去形を組み合わせて使うかということです。生徒さんたちは特に、場面を描写する際、進行形の使い方に苦労することが多く、単純過去形を使いすぎたり、名詞や複合名詞を多用する傾向があります。名詞句に重点を置くこの傾向は、ネイティブスピーカーが好むような進行形の主語と動詞構造の使い方ではなく、日本語訳に起因しているのではないかと考えています。
生徒さんたちは、過去進行形の文を作ることに関してはそれほど問題を抱えていないようです。これは特に難しい時制ではなく、中学2年生で習う内容です。簡単に復習すると、基本的な構造は以下の通りです。構造の説明として簡単な例文もいくつかご覧ください。
was | were + verb[ing]
ex: I was walking down the street
ex: They were having fun
ex: We were playing soccer in the park
ex: He was opening a bottle of champagne.
では物語を話す中で、この時制をどのように使えばよいのでしょう？使い方はいくつかありますので、以下に解説します。実際にどのように活用するか、その感覚をつかんでいただけることと思います。
1．物語の場面や背景を設定する
物語の場面設定や、物語の核心に至るまでの経緯を説明する際、過去進行形がよく使われます。具体的には、以下の例文にあるように、天気や状況、人々の行動などを描写する場合です。
The sun was setting behind the mountains and it was getting cold.
It was raining steadily and the water was running down the windows.
I was walking along the road, the sun was shining and the birds were singing in the trees.
The children were playing in the backyard and their parents were relaxing on the porch drinking tea.
The moon was rising over the roof tops and the chimneys were billowing smoke.
The fire was crackling and we were setting up the tents.
She was sitting by the window watching the cars pass by.
このように進行形を使うことで、複雑な名詞句を用いるよりも感情が込められ、緊張感も増す場合が多い点に注意しましょう。例えば、
It was a sunny, windy day → The sun was shining and the wind was blowing gently through the trees.
2．同時に起こっている並行動作を表す
上記のいくつかの例文でもお気付きだと思いますが、2つのことが同時に起こっているときに、過去進行形がよく使われます。以下にその例をいくつか挙げます。こうすることで場面や背景がより生き生きと、ダイナミックに感じられます。
She was cooking dinner in the kitchen while he was setting the table in the dining room.
The kids were playing outside while their parents were chatting in the living room.
I was listening to classical music while I was doing my math homework.
The teacher was explaining the lesson while the students were taking notes.
3．中断される動作を表す
物語の場面が設定されると、多くの場合、本筋の出来事は、より長い動作を中断する出来事として展開されます。より長い動作は過去進行形で、通常はそれを中断する出来事は単純過去形で表現されます。この点について、いくつかの例を以下に示します。
I was walking home along a dark street when suddenly a young man stepped out in front of me
We were watching a movie when the power went out and the house was pitch dark
The students were writing their exams, concentrating hard when all of a sudden the fire alarm went off.
He was driving to work when he saw an accident just in front of him
We were having dinner at home when there was a sudden knock at the door.
The dog was playing happily in the garden when a bear popped out of the bushes and started chasing the dog.
4．物語の展開速度を緩める
聞き手により強い印象を与える物語を話したい際には、クライマックスの前に緊張感を高めることが有効な場合が多いです。物語の展開の速さを緩めることで、クライマックスの瞬間をより強烈に、またハラハラドキドキするものとして感じさせることができます。このとき過去進行形が大変役に立ちます。以下にいくつかの例を挙げます。
She was walking slowly toward the closed door, her hand was trembling as she reached for the handle.
The clock was ticking loudly, and he was staring at the envelope, afraid to open it.
The wind was howling outside, and the lights were flickering as the storm grew stronger and stronger
He was inching closer to the edge of the cliff, his heart was pounding with every step.
上記のように過去進行形を使うと、とても良い効果をいくつか期待できるため、物語を語る上で非常に役に立ちます。まず一つ目は、物語の聞き手や読者が場面を具体的にイメージしやすくなります。二つ目は、物語に深みと描写を加え、より興味深いものにします。三つ目は、単純過去形で語られる突発的な出来事との対比を生み出します。そして四つ目は、物語のペースをコントロールし、緊張感やサスペンスを生み出すことができます。
アフリカからの物語
さて、ここで私がアフリカのジンバブエで育ち過ごしていた頃の、実際の体験に基づく物語を一つお話しします。まずは、当校で学び始めたばかりの生徒さんたちがよく使うような語り口で話します。その後、物語に深みを与え、緊張感やドラマ性を高めるために、先に挙げた戦略をいくつか用いて話します。

まず最初に、当校で学び始めたばかりの生徒さんと同じようなスタイルで書いたものがこちらです。
We stayed at the Bumbusi Camp in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. It was afternoon and it was a sunny, calm day. I was with my father and little sister and we walked to a natural spring with the national parks guide. We arrived at the spring and then we saw two lionesses in the spring with their cubs. They watched some zebra who came to the pan. Unfortunately, the wind changed direction and the lions smelled us. They growled very loudly and wagged their tails. One lioness ran up the hill with the other cubs. The other one turned and charged straight at us. The guide told us to stand still and he walked towards the lioness with his gun ready to shoot in the air. She stopped about 20 meters from us and growled loudly. Then she turned and ran up the hill after the other lioness. We were terrified and full of adrenaline. It was a terrifying but great experience.
この物語からお分かりいただけるように、私はたくさんの単純過去形を使い、物語を伝えることはできました。また天気を描写するために名詞も使いました。ご覧の通り悪くはありませんが、過去進行形と単純過去形の組み合わせを上記の戦略とともに使うことで、物語はきっとさらに良くなることでしょう。ではもう一度読んでみましょう。
We were staying at the Bumbusi Camp in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe. One afternoon, my father, little sister and I set off for a bush walk to a natural spring with the national parks guide. It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and the wind was blowing gently.
We had walked for about 4 kms and we were approaching the spring. Then, all of a sudden, we saw that two lionesses were sitting in the grass around the spring, their cubs playing next to them. They were watching with interest a group of zebras coming down to the spring to drink. We were watching them from on a small hill above the ground. Suddenly, the wind changed direction and the lionesses caught our smell. Immediately they started growling very loudly, tails lashing about. One lioness ran up the hill on the other side with the 4 cubs. The other lion however turned, facing us, growling furiously. Then, quick as a flash she charged straight at us, running towards us so fast while growling. The guide told us to stand still while he started walking towards the charging lion with his gun in hand. She screamed to a stop about 30 meters from us, dust flying around her. She roared loudly, glared at us and then turned and ran up the hill, following the other lions. We were shaking with fear and adrenaline from the experience. We walked back to the camp in silence, hearts still pounding from what was a terrifying but at the same time, amazing experience.
この物語から学べる、役立つそしておそらく新しい表現
All of a sudden = suddenly
to growl = a low guttural sound made in the throat by a hostile dog or other animal.
to lash = (parts of an animal) move (a part of the body, especially the tail) quickly and violently.
quick as a flash = very quickly.
to charge = to rush forward in attack.
to scream to a halt = to stop very suddenly, often with the idea of noise accompanying the stopping motion.
to glare = to stare in an angry or fierce way.
過去進行形と過去形を織り交ぜて使うことで、物語は長くなり、より生き生きとし、そしてきっとより良いものになることでしょう。
