文法ポイント：「used to」と「would」
これら2つの文法構造は、過去に起こったが現在はもう起こっていないことについて話す際に使われます。
「Used to」＋不定詞は、過去の状態や長期間にわたる行動について話す際に使われます。
I used to live in Canada, but now I live in Japan.
Mitsuhiro used to work at Toyota, but now he is retired.
Yuko used to have a big garden, but now she lives in an apartment. She has a small balcony garden.
I didn’t use to like English, but after I had fun in my lessons at XLingual, I really enjoy studying English.
She didn’t use to wear high heels, but now she’s a flight attendant at Emirates, so she needs to wear them for work.
They didn’t use to live on the coast, but now they are retired and have a house in Miyazaki.
Did you use to visit your grandparents during Obon?
Did he use to wear brightly colored ties?
Did they use to have a dog when they were young?
肯定形では「used to」となり、否定形や疑問形では「use to」となる点に注目してください。これは、過去形が「did」や「did not」によって示されるためです。
ただし、この2つの形の発音に違いはありません。上記のミュージックビデオに登場するクリス・マーティン（歌手）の歌い方をよく聞いて、真似してみてください！その中のリエゾンに注意して聞いてみてくださいね。
「Would」は、過去の習慣について話すときに使われます。
Every Sunday my dad would wake up early to make pancakes for everyone.
On Wednesdays, I would go to the baseball diamond with my friends.
Back in my day, children would help their parents on the farm after school.
We don't normally use the negative or question form of “would” for past habits.
過去の習慣を表す場合、通常「would」の否定形や疑問形は使いません。
…しかし、過去の習慣について話す際は、「used to」＋不定詞を使うこともできます。
I used to drink 10 cups of coffee every day. Now I just drink three.
Ayano used to go swimming every Friday when she was a high school student.
My dad used to smoke, but thankfully he stopped.
どちらを使うのか、どうすれば分かる？
過去の状態について話す場合は、「used to」のみを使用します。
過去の習慣について話す場合は、「would」の方が少しフォーマルな表現になります。
しかし「would」が最もよく使われるのは、物語を語る際であり、その使い方には特定のルールがあります。
まず物語を始める際、最初の行動を「used to」で導入します。
I used to go swimming in the lake every Friday when I was young. ”go swimming”は習慣）
または
I used to live near a lake when I was young.（”live”は状態）
次に、「would」を使います。（次のアクションが「状態」ではない場合）
I would ride there on my bicycle. My friends would come with me sometimes. On some days, a big group of fifteen kids would come. Other days, only my dog would come. She would ride in my front basket.
しかし状態を表すアクションにたどり着いたら、すぐに「used to」に戻してください。
The lake used to be cleaner back then. And there didn’t use to be a fence around it.
この手順を繰り返します。

表現の解説
To hold the key (to something) = 成功するために不可欠な知識や技能を持っていること
One minute I held the key = 一時、私には力があった／全てを知っていた
Walls closing in = 強い恐怖やストレスを感じる
Next the walls were closed on me = 次の瞬間、私は強いストレスを感じた
Pillars of sand = 脆弱な土台
And I discovered that my castles stand on pillars of sand = 自分の城が脆弱な土台の上に建てられていたことに気づいた
Head on a silver plate = 誰かを厳しく罰すること。通常は復讐のため。
Revolutionaries wait for my head on a silver plate = 革命家たちは私に罰を与えたい
Puppet on a string = 他人に操られている人
Just a puppet on a lonely string = 私は他人に操られている
