1) I really like the idea of the Japanese osoji. I think it’s a great idea to start the year with a clean house and a clear mind. However, I’m still not used to it, especially the timing. So, I often don’t do a very good job during osoji.
2) The reason for that is because in Europe and North America, the big cleaning event happens in the spring. We call this event “spring cleaning”. So, my “internal clock” tells me that “cleaning time is in the spring, not in the winter”. This habit is difficult to break.
3) This tradition seems to have ancient roots in Judaism, but nowadays most people clean in the spring because it’s practical. Many years ago, when every house in Europe and North America used to have a fireplace, the only time we could clean it was when it was not being used, and that time started in the spring.
4) Many places in Europe and North America have very snowy winters. It's not fun to clean in the winter. In most of Canada winter is both snowy and extremely cold. When it’s -30 outside, we don’t want to open the windows or wash anything!
5) Winter is such a difficult season that many people choose to run away from it. I talked about those people in my previous easy english blog. Those people are called "snowbirds".
6) When the snow melts and we can open the windows again, we feel energized, and we want to freshen up our homes. So, we deep clean our house in the spring!
7) Some people set aside an entire day to do it, and finish the entire house in a few hours on the weekend. Others do it little by little, and put in a couple hours of work every day. I have a set of rules to simplify my spring cleaning. Basically,
- Focus on one room at a time
- Start from the top, work towards the bottom
- Wipe with a dry cloth first, then wipe with a wet cloth
- Declutter as you go
- Finish by vacuuming
8) The kitchen usually takes longer to clean, because the fridge, the stove, the pantry and the cupboards take very long to clean. Sometimes, it takes me 2 days to clean the kitchen properly…
9) Meanwhile, my husband washes the windows, washes the curtains, wipes the walls, cleans the baseboards and cleans the heater vents.
10) Some people are very thorough and do even more tasks, such as shampooing the rugs and carpets, waxing wooden floors, polishing silverware, pressure washing the driveway and resealing grout.
11) Fireplaces aren’t as common as they used to be, but there are some houses that have a fireplace, and many houses that have a wood stove. So, if the house has a fireplace or wood stove, the chimney must be cleaned. If the house has a dryer, the dryer vent must be cleaned too. If these two things are not cleaned well, there is a high risk of fire!
12) Some people hire specialized cleaning services. But many North Americans like to DIY as much as we can. We DIY even the more complex tasks of cleaning the chimney and the dryer vents. For some cleaning tasks, such as shampooing the carpet and pressure washing the driveway, we need specialized equipment. Usually, we rent that equipment. If we are lucky, we can borrow the equipment from a neighbor or a friend, if they have it.
13) For everything else, usually a sponge, a cloth, some water, some multipurpose cleaner and sometimes a little bit of baking soda are enough to do a good spring cleaning. When do you like to deep clean your house? What do you usually clean?

9) その間、私の主人は窓拭きをしたり、カーテンを洗ったり、壁や、壁と床の間の部分を丁寧に拭いたり、また暖房の通気孔を掃除したりします。
