最近レッスンで「to be」「to have」「to get」という非常によく使われる動詞に関する間違いを多く目にしますので、これらの関係性と日常的な英語の場面での使い方について、今回簡単に解説したいと思います。もちろん、これらの動詞は英語のあらゆる場面で使われ、多くの用法があるため、非常に複雑です。このブログでは各動詞の広範な複雑さには触れません。むしろ、いくつかの簡単な例を通して、これらの動詞の一般的な用法、特に状態に関する用法について説明したいと思います。これらの基本動詞を英会話の中で使う際にもっと自信をもっていただければ幸いです。
ジェニーという架空の人物を設定し、彼女のシンプルな人生のストーリーを通して話を進めていきましょう。ジェニーは20代、ここでは24歳とします。この単純なストーリーの中では、可能な限り「to be」「to have」「to get」の3つの動詞だけを使用するようにしていきます。
24 years old
Jenny is a nurse in a hospital in Edinburgh. She is single but she has a boyfriend, Ted. She is tall, slim and she has long, blond, curly hair. Ted is also tall and slim. He has green eyes and short, black hair. They are both happy.
28 year old
Jenny is engaged to Ted. They got engaged in Italy. Ted proposed to her in front of the Trevi fountain in Rome. They will get married next year. Jenny is a nurse in the ICU ward and Ted has a good job in a bank where he is an accountant. They have an apartment in Edinburgh.
さて、「to be」は一時的であれ永久的であれ、状態全体を表すために用いられることが分かりますね。これは人や物を説明する連結動詞です。形容詞と組み合わせて非常に頻繁に使われます。例：「to be single」「to be engaged」「to be tall」「to be slim」「to be happy」。また、職業や立場を説明する場合にも使われます。例：「he is an accountant」「she is a nurse」。
動詞「to have」は、「to be」のように状態全体ではなく、性質や特徴を示す際によく使われます。例：「to have short hair」「to have green eyes」。また、所有を表す際にも非常に頻繁に使われます。例：「to have a boyfriend」「to have a good job」「to have an apartment」。
動詞「to get」は他の二つとは異なります。他の二つがよく状態を表すのに対し、「to get」は状態の変化に焦点を当てています。この点を理解することが非常に重要です。詳しく見てみましょう。例：「to get married」は「to be engaged → to be married」という状態の変化です。矢印は「to get」が表すことに焦点を当てています。同様に、「to get engaged」は「to be single → to be engaged」という状態の変化に焦点を当てています。

They are also both very busy.

Sadly, Jenny and Ted are divorced because Jenny found out that Ted had a secret girlfriend. They got divorced last year. The two children live with Jenny in the house. Ted has a new apartment and he is going to get remarried next year to the girl he had an affair with.
